Олександр Довженко (1894—1956) — український радянський кінорежисер, фундатор поетичного кіно, творець нового літературного жанру — кіноповісті. Його називали поетом і водночас політиком кіно. Митця порівнювали з Гомером, Шекспіром, Бальзаком. О. Довженко поставив 14 ігрових і документальних фільмів (його кінострічка «Земля» увійшла до десятки найвидатніших фільмів усіх часів і народів), написав 15 літературних сценаріїв і кіноповістей, дві п'єси, автобіографічну повість, понад 20 оповідань. До цього видання увійшли кіноповісті «Зачарована Десна», «Україна в огні», які стали шедеврами української літератури, деякі оповідання, а також вражаючий документ доби — «Щоденник. 1941—1956», де описані історичні події, свідком яких був О. Довженко. Автор також розповідає про зустрічі зі своїми сучасниками, розмірковує про минуле і майбутнє. Саме сторінкам щоденника митець довіряв свої найпотаємніші творчі плани й розробки сценаріїв.
