Книга «Вшанування Каталонії», написана Джорджем Орвеллом (1903 — 1950) з власного досвіду участі в громадянській війні в Іспанії на боці республіканців, — одна з найправдивіших розповідей про ту війну. Наприкінці 1936 року Джордж Орвелл вирушив до Іспанії як кореспондент «BBC» і газети «Observer». У складі ополчення лівої Робітничої партії марксистського об’єднання (ПОУМ) він кілька місяців воював на фронті проти франкістів.
Навесні 1937-го, в Барселоні, куди приїхала його дружина Елін, Орвелл потрапив у протистояння між комуністами й анархо-синдикалістською Національною конфедерацією праці, разом із ПОУМ став на бік анархістів. Після закінчення сутичок іспанські комуністи звинуватили в усьому ПОУМ, заборонили її та почали репресії. Орвелл з дружиною самі ледве не стали жертвами таємних розправ агентів НКВС.
