Життя Караваджо – неймовірніше за вигадку. На початку 1600-х років він був найвідомішим живописцем Рима, який створював вражаючі реалістичні і драматичні полотна на замовлення вельможних клієнтів. Він не корився жодним правилам і був знаменитий на всю Італію своєю бурхливою вдачею. Вчинив убивство, став лицарем й утік із однієї з найнеприступніших в’язниць світу. Створював о́брази святих, зображуючи простих людей з вулиць і ринків. Досконало працював із світлотінню. Вдягався лише в чорне й не купував новий одяг, аж поки старий не починав розвалюватися, проте для роботи завжди обирав тільки найкращі матеріали.
