Писати Альбер Камю почав у передвоєнний період. 1937 і 1938 рр. в Алжирі виходять збірки його коротких лірично-філософських есеїв і нарисів «Спід і лице» та «Шлюбний бенкет», де у вільній формі, що поєднує філософські медитації та ліричні відступи, знаходить відображення його «середземноморське» світовідчуття.
