Валер’ян Підмогильний (1901–1937) — український письменник і перекладач, представник покоління «Розстріляного відродження», життя якого обірвав сталінський режим. Творче сонце прозаїка зійшло рано: у дев’ятнадцять років видав свою першу збірку, у двадцять — дебютував з перекладом роману «Таїс» Анатоля Франса. Саме завдяки Підмогильному вийшли твори Бальзака, Стендаля, Дідро, Гюго, Вольтера, Меріме українською мовою. Як автор Валер’ян Підмогильний показав себе майстром глибокого психологізму, інтелектуалізму. Він тонко зобразив проблеми міста й села, людини й обставин... Попри різноманіття сюжетів ці риси притаманні всім його творам.
