Український державний діяч, прозаїк, драматург і художник Володимир Винниченко (1880–1951) дебютував у літературі на початку ХХ ст. Був змушений покинути Україну, якийсь час проживав у Австрії, Німеччині, Швейцарії, Італії, Франції. За кордоном співпрацював із низкою українських видань, політична кар'єра митця тривала і в еміграції. Сюжети новел та оповідань, що увійшли до видання, здебільшого відбивають соціальні струси початку ХХ ст. Наростання невдоволення селян, які готові піти проти пана, змальовується в оповіданні «Суд». У творі «Салдатики!» розкрита психологія лідерства — з непримітного селянина народжується ватажок. Невідповідність між оболонкою і суттю робить кумедним в очах оточення героя твору «Народний діяч».
