Джордж Орвелл (Ерік Артур Блер) (1903—1950) — знаменитий англійський письменник. Світову славу йому принесли повість «Колгосп тварин» і роман-антиутопія «1984». Письменник все життя вів щоденники. Вони описують його життя і думки упродовж багатьох років. У другому томі представлено щоденникові записи 1940—1949 років.
Друга світова війна. Після вторгнення Гітлера до Польщі Велика Британія оголосила війну Німеччині. Нідерланди, Бельгія, Люксембург окуповані, Франція капітулювала. Весь той період Орвелл описав у щоденнику. Він працював редактором на радіо ВВС для закордонної аудиторії, вступив у лави місцевої оборони. У Лондоні тоді було небезпечно: постійні повітряні тривоги, нальоти, бомбардування. Будинок, де жили Орвелл з дружиною, розбомбило. Саме в ці воєнні дні він задумав і написав «Колгосп тварин» і «1984».
