Франц Кафка (1883—1924) — знаменитий австрійський письменник, більшість творів якого були опубліковані вже після смерті автора. У видавництві «Фоліо» вийшли друком його романи «Замок», «Процес», «Америка».
Самотність і відчуженість, які письменник відчував у своєму житті, можливо, й змусили його писати щоденник. Кафка розпочав його 1910 року і вів — іноді з тривалими перервами — до 1923-го.
У щоденникових записах, зроблених Францом Кафкою у 1913—1923 роках, містяться роздуми про самогубство й нерозуміння з боку рідних і близьких; про ненависну, стомливу службу, яка дає засоби до існування й водночас виснажує його; про початок Першої світової війни і про загальну мобілізацію. Також у щоденнику Кафка занотовує свої літературні задуми й початки оповідань, що спадають йому на думку, спостереження, в яких чітко проступає туга з приводу поразок Австрії і прозирає чорна безодня відчаю дуже самотньої людини.
