Бернард Шоу (1856-1950) – ірландський письменник і драматург, лауреат Нобелівської премії. Більшу частину свого життя він жив і творив в Англії, проте саме Ірландія, де суперечності тієї епохи – від соціальних до релігійних, виявлялися особливо разюче, сформувала його водночас бурхливий і глузливо-спокійний характер, у якому поєднувалася жага справедливості й уїдливий скептицизм. Така сама й драматургія Бернарда Шоу – гостра, проблемна, де герої завжди є носіями певних поглядів. Нічого подібного на англійській сцені, та і європейській загалом тоді не було. У цій книжці переважно вміщено п’єси, яким навіть сам автор дав визначення – «неприємні». Ще б пак! Адже в них йдеться про моральні злочини, грошові махінації, шлюбні зради, проституцію.
