Микола Хвильовий (1893—1933), один з основоположників пореволюційної української прози, писав про себе: «Я належу до того художнього напрямку, який зараз не в моді, — я… романтик!». До видання увійшли твори М. Хвильового останніх років його життя. Панівним у тогочасній літературі був метод соцреалізму. Проте твори Хвильового мають ледь помітні прояви сатири та дошкульної іронії, подекуди й елементи психологічних конфліктів. Герой оповідання «Щасливий секретар» — справжній служитель партії, він не має ні батьківського, ні родинного почуття, однак щасливий. У творі «Останній день» письменник вирішив показати, що навіть із персонажа-робота, бездушного автомата, можна до певної міри зробити «живу» людину.
