Микола Куліш (1892–1937) літературній діяльності присвятив майже все своє життя — 30 років із 45. Він писав навіть тоді, коли був в ув’язненні на Соловках. Свою хресну дорогу він пройшов разом із багатьма іншими українськими митцями Розстріляного Відродження. Його розстріляли 3 листопада 1937 року в Сандармоху. «Народний Малахій» — утопічна історія «висококультурного» сільського листоноші Малахія Стаканчика. Малахій, що перекладається як «посланець Божий», прагне зруйнувати бездуховне існування людства. Живучи в постреволюційний час, він уявив себе обраним світу цього, а за мету взяв негайне реформування суспільства. Прем’єра п’єси відбулася 1927 року, коли її поставив український режисер Лесь Курбас. Радянське керівництво змушувало переробляти спектакль, бо розуміло, до чого може призвести революційно налаштоване населення. А 1929 року заборонило п’єсу остаточно.
