Валер’ян Підмогильний (1901—1937) — український письменник і перекладач, один із найвидатніших прозаїків українського «розстріляного відродження». Минуло майже сто років від написання роману «Місто», але він і досі є актуальним. І сьогодні мрійники вирушають у мандри, полишаючи свої домівки в селах, у пошуках кращої долі й далеко не завжди знаходять те, що шукають. Молодий енергійний сільський юнак Степан Радченко приїздить до Києва, вступає до економічного вишу й сподівається повернутися з новими знаннями на село. Він зустрічається із сільською дівчиною Надійкою, сумлінно навчається в інституті, але гординя й амбіції беруть своє, і Степан вирішує підкорити місто… Після масових репресій інтелігенції 1930-х років, під які потрапив також і Валер’ян Підмогильний, роман «Місто», як і інші твори письменника, був заборонений до 1989 року.
