Листування Франца Кафки з його нареченою Феліцією Бауер тривало понад п’ять років — з 1912-го по 1917-й. Двічі Кафка робив їй пропозицію шлюбу і двічі вона погодилася. Родичі з обох сторін вважали весілля неминучим, а Кафка в цей час описував у щоденнику свої муки: він прагнув самотності й сумнівався в тому, що взагалі коли-небудь буде в змозі вступити в шлюб. У своїх листах до Феліції він писав в основному про себе, про свої муки, страхи та бажання. Мабуть, реальна Феліція Кафку не цікавила, його захопив придуманий образ, тінь жінки.
