Історичний роман О. Соколовського «Богун» вперше був надрукований 1931 року в підсовєтській Україні, у видавництві «ЛІМ». Відомо, що на вимогу видавництва автор мусив переробляти свій твір кілька разів. Це є безсумнівним доказом того, що ідейна концепція роману ніяк не вкладалася в рамки прописаного окупантом світогляду. Та навіть такі поступки не врятували автора — 1937 року Соколовському висунули звинувачення в тому, що нібито 1932 року він увійшов до складу антирадянської есерівської організації, а 1936 року був перевербований в антирадянську українську націоналістичну організацію і очолив терористичну групу, яка ставила за мету насильницьке повалення Радянської влади в Україні.
