Джордж Орвелл (Ерік Артур Блер) (1903 — 1950) — британський письменник і журналіст. Всесвітню славу письменнику принесли роман-антиутопія «1984» (вперше опублікований 1949 року) і алегорична притча «Колгосп тварин» (1945). Письменник раніше від інших позбувся ілюзій щодо світової місії Радянської держави. Він ставив поруч імена Гітлера й Сталіна і зазначав спільність тоталітарних методів обох диктаторів. У передмові до українського видання «Колгоспу тварин» (1948 року), Орвелл зазначив, що для нього дуже важливо, щоб люди на Заході побачили радянський режим таким, яким він є. Найвідоміші цитати: «Усі тварини рівні, але деякі тварини рівніші за інших» («Колгосп тварин»), «Хто керує минулим, той керує майбутнім: хто керує сьогоденням, керує минулим» («1984»), «Війна — це мир, свобода — це рабство, сила — в незнанні» («1984»), як і самі твори, не втратили актуальності.
